Various Graduate Campus activities are dedicated to community and the wellbeing of doctoral and postdoctoral researchers at UNIL and CHUV, with the goal of creating connections between the people of all seven faculties, and to combine research with wellbeing.

Doctoral candidates and postdoc researchers can contact the Graduate Campus team at any time to request a one-to-one, confidential discussion, by email.

Given the current circumstances, these sessions are held by videoconference.



Prévention et gestion de stress (in French)

Une accumulation de stress provoque des tensions physiques, mentales et émotionnelles. Si ces tensions ne sont pas évacuées, elles peuvent entraîner des douleurs, des troubles fonctionnels et /ou un sentiment d'oppression. Un déséquilibre s'installe entre ses ressources et les exigences professionnelles. Un déséquilibre s'installe entre ses ressources et les exigences professionnelles. Les facultés d'adaptation diminuent, entraînant une dévalorisation de soi, un sentiment d'échec, qui peuvent conduire au burnout.

Buts de l'atelier

  • Prendre conscience de l'importance du lien entre la posture et la respiration
  • Comprendre comment s'installent les tensions
  • Connaître les techniques (corporelles, respiratoires et mentales) pour se décharger du stress afin d'éviter qu'il ne devienne chronique
  • Réaliser l'importance d'une bonne hygiène de vie et reconnaître les signaux qui doivent alerter
  • Avoir des outils concrets pour mettre en place les changements nécessaires.

Thriving in your postdoc

How to make your postdoc a more fulfilling time of your life

The purpose of this workshop is to explore ways to make the postdoc time of passage a more fulfilling experience. Together, we will investigate what it is that makes you thrive, what you cherish and what you require to live more fulfilled and happier, not in some distant future but today and tomorrow. You will take a look at your work- life-balance, discover what might be missing, listen to the experience of others, and together craft initial answers to these questions.

As a result of the workshop, you will

  • assess how content you are with your current postdoc life, including work-life-balance,

  • understand the significance of a balanced and fulfilled life to high performance,

  • experience an attitude of curiosity as a prerequisite for a more proactive life,

  • discover ways in which you can add to the quality of your current life, and

  • design practical steps to continue on a path towards a more fulfilling everyday academic life.

The workshop also prepares you for your future role when you may have to guide other young researchers and support them in their ambition not only for success but for sustained performance and a fulfilled live.

You are encouraged to bring and share your own knowledge and experience. At the beginning of the workshop, we create a trustful and supportive atmosphere, in which all of us shall feel safe and comfortable to contribute what they already know about the subject.

Please make sure that you can be present during the entire time of the workshop.

Stress and Energy Management

The Stress and Energy Management series of mini-workshops ("workouts") has been created for postdocs to provide some essential tools for stress and energy management. The tools are based on easy-to-apply techniques, that focus either on how to handle a stressful situation when it arises, or how to build the capacity to sustain high levels of energy as to be better equipped to face future challenging situations.

The workouts have been designed to be highly interactive and experiential, to make learning more effective and personalized. Participants will be working on real case scenarios individually as well as in small groups.

Module 1 : Navigate Out of Feeling Overwhelmed

This Workout will help participants to get out of the feeling of being overwhelmed. At the end of the workshop, they will be able to recognize a situation in which they feel overwhelmed, know what specific factors trigger the overwhelm and find their way out in a more empowered way.

Module 2 : Take Charge of Your Time: The Power of a "Positive No"

In the workplace more often than not we find ourselves in situations where we would like to say No ...yet we end up saying yes, often out of fear of hurting people or destroying important relationships. In this workout, participants will learn the important and art of saying a 'positive no' through a simple, proven three-step technique.

Intelligence Ă©motionnelle

L’intelligence émotionnelle est un enjeu stratégique pour le bien-être, l’épanouissement mais également la performance. Elle est composée de deux compétences principales:

  • Diagnostiquer son état émotionnel et celui des autres
  • Mettre en place des stratégies de régulation émotionnelle

L’objectif de l’atelier est d’apprendre à mieux comprendre ses émotions et aussi celle des autres afin de mieux gérer son stress au travail et dans la vie personnelle, mais également pour développer une bienveillance et une cohérence d’équipe réduisant ainsi les conflits parfois difficiles à gérer.

La journée repose sur l’utilisation d’un jeu de cartes Emotilt©. Les 3 axes du jeu sont: 

  1. Manifestation 
    • Identifier les différentes manifestations des émotions chez soi / chez les autres
    • Percevoir l'intensité des signaux
    • Connaître son expression préférée
    • Découvrir l'ascenseur émotionnel
    • Identifier les origines des émotions: réaction / anticipation / réactivation 
  2. Valeur / Besoin
    • Comprendre ce qui est important pour moi / les autres
    • Faire la différence entre émotion en tant que source d'information ou source d'interprétation 
    • Exprimer ses émotions et ses besoins: avantages et inconvénients
  3. Stratégie de régulation
    • Comprendre les enjeux de la régulation émotionnelle
    • Prendre conscience des stratégies possibles concrètement
    • Lever les taboux des émotions en entreprise
    • Etablir un plan d'action individuel

Grâce à cet formation, vous apprendez notamment à mettre en place des stratégies de régulation émotionnelle concrètes individuelles et collectives. Ces compétences s’avèreront être utiles pour votre milieu professionnel actuel mais également seront un atout pour votre future carrière.

Conflict Management

This participative workshop is specially created to empower PhD students and postdocs to prevent clashes and to resolve conflicts toward mutually beneficial solutions, as well as cultivate a collaborative setting. Unlike more traditional conflict management courses which focus solely on communication changes to manage conflicts, this workshop takes instead a more complete approach. It is designed to guide the participants through cognitive biases, emotion management, communication, negotiation and conflict regulation for productive conflict management.

Content of the workshop:

  1. Value of diversity of backgrounds and perspectives
  2. Your conflict management style: discuss experiences, personal styles of approaching conflict
  3. Ingredients of conflict: what contributes to conflict
  4. Perceptions and cognitive biases in conflict: self-knowledge and awareness of diversity and biases
  5. Emotions in conflict: their functional message (values, boundaries, expectations, etc.)
  6. Discover 4 emotion regulation techniques
  7. Communication:  verbal and non-verbal communication, communication of priorities and decisions
  8. Negotiation and conflict resolution: explore the interests at play, learn to reframe to make common interests arise, and find win-win type solutions
  9. Recognizing the positive aspects of conflicts

The workshop will consist of a 1-day course for the whole group (in-person), followed by individual feedback sessions (45 minutes per session, held over Zoom) around 2-4 weeks after the workshop. The in-person session will comprise of small group discussions and exercises, as well as individual exercises.

Before the course, participants will receive a questionnaire to prepare for the workshop.

Target Audience

The workshop is open to PhD students and postdocs.

Call for Projects

Organise your own workshop

As a doctoral or postdoctoral researcher, you can apply for funding from the Graduate Campus to organise an event for your colleagues. Funding is available for events that aim to broaden participants' academic and methodological backgrounds, and ideally cross disciplinary boundaries (or at least present a clear interest in optimising their career prospects).
